Nuisance–New York City Tenants

Your landlord may try to evict you from your rent-regulated apartment on the basis that you are engaging in some kind of “nuisance” behavior.  Don’t panic; the landlord has to prove its allegations, and if they are true, you are generally entitled to “cure” the allegations, i.e. to stop the behavior, before your lease can be terminated.  Landlords often make such claims in order to recover rent-regulated apartments because tenants may feel embarrassed or ashamed about the allegations, whether true or untrue.  However, you can fight these cases and win; and, depending on the terms of your lease, the landlord may even have to reimburse you for your legal fees.
